Power management

I am wondering if there are any power management capabilities where I could turn off at least the backlight when the display is left unused for extended period of time. This way it will extend the life of the display.

You can put the display into sleep mode.  Please see the SSD1289 data sheet.  Look at pg 40 and pgs 72-74.
