SDT022ATFT - Example code to write a character to screen?

I've taken the initialization code from this forum, so I'm set up in 18 bit RGB mode/ 8-bit bus interface I mode.  I can read parameters from the LCD so I'm convinced everything is working correctly, but I cannot get a test character to the screen.  The Ilitek datasheet doesn't shed much light on how to write pixel data to memory.  Could you please provide example code on how to write a character to the screen, say right in the middle of the screen?
